Interessado em investigar a relação entre texto e fisicalidade, o artista britânico Michael Dean toma emprestado instrumentos e estratégias da prática de escultor, escritor e tipógrafo.   Ao explorar as possibilidades tridimensionais da linguagem, Dean frequentemente “soletra” suas palavras por meio de objetos em escala humana, empregando materiais industriais e cotidianos, tais como concreto, aço, MDF, cadeados e seus livros tingidos.

Embora a transmutação da linguagem seja particularmente importante para a produção de Dean, suas esculturas não devem ser lidas como palavras, mas sim identificadas como elemento da linguagem em sua forma própria e imaginadas como palavra ou ideia. O artista atribui aspecto físico a uma linguagem desenvolvida de modo pessoal, com base em uma série de alfabetos tipográficos que ele mesmo desenha.

Ao tratar do tema atemporal da intimidade humana, referências ao corpo humano são recorrentes nas obras de Dean. Moldes dos punhos, membros e dedos do próprio artista e dos seus filhos, com buracos perfurados para os olhos, e músculos da língua estão entre as figuras presentes em sua obra. A língua é particularmente emblemática do seu interesse duplo por tato e linguagem, já que é a parte do corpo que além de sentir o toque e o sabor, molda as palavras antes que saiam da nossa boca.

Michael Dean (Newcastle Upon Tyne, Reino Unido, 1977) vive e trabalha em Londres.
